What treatment options are available for COVID-19?
In October, 2020, the antiviral drug Veklury (also known as Remdesivir) was approved by the FDA for use in hospitals for the treatment of certain COVID-19 patients requiring hospitalization. Veklury is administered as an I.V. and is not available in urgent care settings.
Antiviral oral pills, Molnupiravir (developed by Merck/Ridgeback Biotherapeutics) and Ritonavir (developed by Pfizer), have both been submitted to the FDA for emergency use authorization. If approved, the antiviral pills could be available by prescription only, for certain high-risk patients who receive a positive COVID-19 result, by the end of 2021.
Antiviral drugs are taken by mouth for five days starting soon after a patient with mild-to-moderate COVID-19 and at least one risk factor for developing severe illness tests positive for the virus.
