Encouraging employee health and safety
As trained occupational medicine specialists, our WellNow providers are able to perform physical examinations at any of our locations or directly at your workplace. We’ll examine and provide medical recommendations as well as supply the appropriate paperwork necessary for employees to start or return to work.
Through our physical examination services, WellNow helps your organization remain compliant with the appropriate regulatory agencies. We also help promote employee health by encouraging a safer work environment. Our programs are customized based on your needs, and we perform examinations on a schedule that minimizes downtime.
Pre-employment
We will help determine whether applicants are medically and physically able to perform their potential job duties. Depending on the requirements of the position and the employer, our trained medical staff will create an exam that caters to the unique duties of the job. Exams may include:
- Whisper tests
- Visual acuity
- Blood pressure check
- Dipstick urinalysis
DOT physicals
A DOT (Department of Transportation) exam is a federally regulated medical examination to determine if a person meets the federal standard to drive a commercial motor vehicle. The exam includes:
- Vision tests (including distance, color and horizontal field of vision)
- Hearing
- Dipstick urinalysis
- Past medical history analysis
- Physical examination
Some medical conditions that may disqualify or delay a candidate from receiving a medical certificate include:
- Hypertension
- Diabetes
- Sleep apnea
- Cardiac conditions
- Certain medications
- Neurological conditions

Bus driver
This exam is a state-regulated physical designed specifically for bus drivers. Like the DOT exam, this physical includes:
- Vision tests (including distance, color and horizontal field of vision)
- Hearing
- Dipstick urinalysis
- Past medical history
- Physical examination
Asbestos
Employees who are exposed to asbestos may need to have a medical surveillance exam in accordance with OSHA 1910.1001. Employees who require asbestos testing include those who:
- Mine asbestos
- Work with minerals contaminated with asbestos
- Maintain or repair asbestos-containing buildings
- Have direct contact with asbestos-containing waste or dust emissions
Our asbestos-clearing program includes:
- A full medical history overview and examination
- Review of all questionnaires
- Chest X-rays, Pulmonary Function Testing (PFT) and blood work (when indicated)
The program can provide early detection of asbestos-related illnesses, helping ensure that employees are able to perform their job duties safely.
Silica
According to OSHA guidelines, employees who are exposed to crystalline silica particles are at risk of diseases such as:
- Silicosis (an incurable lung disease)
- Lung cancer
- Chronic obstructive pulmonary disease (COPD)
- Kidney disease
Our providers will work with you to ensure your employees are safe from the harmful effects of silica exposure by providing:
- Physical exams
- Chest X-rays with B-reading
- Pulmonary Function Testing (PFT)
- Respirator Fit Testing
- TB testing
Hazardous Material (HazMat)
During a HazMat exam, our providers will evaluate employees for any health effects due to hazardous-material exposure. This exam includes:
- Physical examination
- Review of medical and work history
- Blood work
- Dipstick urinalysis
- Audiometric screening
- Pulmonary Function Testing (PFT)
- Chest X-rays
- EKG
Fit for duty
A Fit for Duty examination helps create and maintain a safe, efficient workplace. It is performed when:
- An employer has specific concerns about an employee’s physical or mental ability to perform the essential duties of a job with or without accommodations
- There is an increase in accidents or injuries
- Employee productivity or job performance decreases
- Health problems are observed on the job
With the collaboration of the employee’s physician, we will conduct a physical examination tailored to fit the requirements of the job.
Return to work
A Return to Work evaluation is performed to ensure that an employee is able to safely return to work and to perform his or her job duties following an injury or illness. We will:
- Collaborate with employers to develop plans for modified duty or additional support, as needed
- Evaluate the employee within the context of the specific job duties
An employee should be released to return to work by his or her attending physician before conducting a Return to Work exam.
Annual
We offer annual physicals to help employers determine if their employees can continue to perform their duties safely and effectively. Our providers review:
- Past medical history
- Current medications
An annual examination may include:
- Height and weight checks
- Whisper tests
- Visual acuity
- Blood pressure check
- Dipstick urinalysis
- EKG
- Audiometric screening
- X-ray
- Pulmonary Function Test (PFT)
- Blood work
- Physical fitness test
Firefighter
WellNow performs all firefighter exams according to OSHA and NFPA standards, if required. Following each exam, you will receive a qualified statement to indicate if the firefighter is medically qualified to perform his or her duties.
Police
Police officers need to maintain exceptional physical health in order to perform their job duties safely and effectively. Our providers offer regular physical examinations, pre-employment physicals, and other services for officers in accordance with local and state regulations.
