What causes a fever?

A fever can be a sign that your body is fighting an infection. Viral infections, like the flu and
common cold, and bacterial infections will often lead to fevers. Other times a fever may be the result of another condition like heatstroke.
If you have a fever, your body is doing its best to help you heal, but fever treatment is still vital to your wellbeing. A very high fever or body temperature should be treated as an emergency condition, and even moderate fevers can make you feel uncomfortable and are worth treating.

Symptoms of a Fever

The easiest way to know if you have a fever is by taking your temperature with a thermometer. A temperature of 100.0 F (37.8 C) or higher may require treatment.

Other symptoms of a fever can include:

• Chills and/or shivering
• Sweating
• Headache
• Lack of appetite
• Muscle aches
• Overall weakness
