What is a concussion?

When your head is bumped or jolted, your head and brain move rapidly back and forth. This causes your brain to bounce or twist in ways it normally does not, sometimes even stretching or damaging brain cells.

Concussions vary from mild to severe and while most are non-life-threatening, it is best to keep an eye on symptoms as the effects can still cause harm.

Are all minor head injuries considered concussions?

Yes. If the injury affects your head beyond minor cuts or scrapes, it is classified as a concussion.

What are the symptoms of a concussion or minor head injury?

You may experience no changes after a minor head injury, but it is important to pay attention to how you feel and if you experience any changes which may indicate you need to be examined by a medical professional. Common head injury symptoms to watch for are:

  • Dizziness

  • Nausea or vomiting

  • Confusion
